About Us

Welcome to ChronicleTime, your home for horological news, reviews, and discussions! We created this blog as a gathering place for enthusiasts who, like us, find timepieces endlessly fascinating.

My name is Evan Walsh, founder and editor of ChronicleTime. I’ve been enthralled with watches and clocks since childhood. Over the past decade I’ve transformed my passion into an expertise through hands-on experience, training, and research.

In 2012 I became a certified watchmaker and clockmaker after an intensive program. I apprenticed with a master watchmaker restoring antique pocket watches. I’ve also taken courses in modern luxury watch servicing and quartz watch repair. This training allows me to provide in-depth analysis.

My co-founder Michael Chen has a similar background, having trained as a watchmaker after collecting timepieces for the past 15 years. We come from a place of experience, curiosity and sheer enthusiasm!

While Michael and I share a passion for all timepieces, we each have specialized areas of expertise. I (Evan) focus primarily on watches including both vintage mechanical watches as well as modern quartz and smartwatch technology. I have extensively researched watchmaking, handled thousands of watches across price points, and trained specifically in watch service and repair.

Michael’s specialty is in clocks of all types, from antique grandfather clocks to contemporary alarm clocks. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of clock movements, chiming mechanisms, repair techniques, and clock history. Michael has trained with a master clockmaker and worked hands-on with everything from 400-day anniversary clocks to Atmos perpetual clocks.

So while Michael and I both provide analysis on watches, clocks, and horology in general, I tend to dig deeper on the watch side while Michael brings his expert clock perspective. We find this makes for very complete, balanced reviews and discussions encompassing all aspects of timepieces. Our distinct but complementary expertise allows us to better serve readers looking to dive deep into watches, clocks, or both!

At ChronicleTime, Michael and I strive to share our horological discoveries with fellow enthusiasts. Here’s what you can expect:

Discussions & Interviews

In addition to news and reviews, we host lively discussions across a range of horological topics:

  • Collector’s forums on vintage watches, pocket watches, antique clocks
  • Style guidance on watches from dive to dress to aviation
  • Watch maintenance tips and clock repair advice
  • Interviews with watch designers, brand executives and experts
  • Debates on industry issues like in-house vs sourced movements

The comments sections allow you to weigh in and exchange perspectives. We aim to build a community around the appreciation of time and timekeeping.

Hands-On Experience

We don’t just write reviews from a distance – we handle everything we review. When evaluating a new Omega watch or Hermle clock, we spend hands-on time to assess the quality and provide detailed impressions. This hands-on experience lets us describe subtleties other reviews may miss.

Our independent evaluations are meant to complement, not replace, your own firsthand experience at an authorized dealer. We aim to preview and guide, not detract from the magic of encountering a fine timepiece yourself.

Passionate & Entertaining

While deeply knowledgeable, we never take ourselves too seriously. We aim to spark curiosity, inspire passion for horology, and entertain readers – expert and novice alike.

Our blog strives to make learning about watches and clocks an enjoyable journey. We happily go down rabbit holes of history, mechanics and design if it satisfies your curiosity. You won’t find any pretentiousness here.

There’s so much ground we have yet to cover, and that excites us. On behalf of Michael and myself, thank you for joining us. Please have a look around, and let us know your thoughts. We aim to build something special for fellow horology enthusiasts, and you’re an important part of that.
